At 8:07 p.m. last night, a report came in of a dead bear who had been hit on Road 223 near Teaford Saddle in North Fork.
I stopped by the site of the accident today where the bear got hit and I took some photos.
I spoke to a witness from North Fork who said he came upon the accident shortly after it happened and saw the dead mother bear in the road with the cub nearby. The cub then climbed high into a tree.
Apparently the person who hit the bear had driven off. A neighbor of mine said he went by the scene early this morning (6 a.m.) and saw what he thought was the cub on its back with his arms out, either resting, or not alive. But when I went by later, the cub was no where to be found.
Fish and Game came and took the deceased mother away around 12 noon today. They also tried to locate the cub in nearby trees with binoculars, but they were unsuccessful. Fish and Game was also going to set up a big cylinder trap that they brought, but it seemed like they didn't set it up.
